An accessory dwelling unit is also known as a granny flat, in-law suite or backyard home. It is a secondary housing unit on a lot with an existing single-family home. ADU is an independent unit with its own kitchen, bathroom, living areas, and entrance. ADUs can be built from the ground up or can be made from the conversion of existing structures such as garages. Backyard homes are a great way to increase your property value and create extra space for family members. In addition, an in-law suite can be a source of additional income if rented. DETACHED ADU
A detached accessory dwelling unit is an independent structure with its own entrance and other amenities. Detached ADUs are the most convenient type for long-term rental. The accessory dwelling will get a separate address as well as independent utilities.

ATTACHED ADU
If the lot does not have enough space for a stand-alone ADU, attached secondary dwelling is a great solution. While it is attached, ADU still needs its own entrance, kitchen and a bathroom. ADU can be attached to the main house or a garage. It can also be added as a second story.
GARAGE TO ADU CONVERSION
The most common and affordable accessory dwelling units are garages converted into habitable homes. This type of conversion allows maximum efficiency while utilizing existing framing and negates the need to provide additional parking spaces.
JUNIOR ADU
A junior accessory dwelling unit is a new type of ADU in California. JADU must be within the primary residence and cannot be larger than 500 sqft. It also requires separate entrance and kitchen. The JADU can share bathroom facilities with the main house.
